Katsburg

An urban geofiction project by Sebas van den Brink (Groningen, Netherlands).

Katsburg was the first large city map I drew. The idea behind it was reclaiming the land in the Marker lake and build a big city. I very much disliked modern town centers of planned cities, even at nine years old when I designed it. So Katsburg featured a canal system and a classic Dutch city layout. There are also woods within the city ring road and a couple of old defense works. I didn’t bother much with road names because that would’ve been too small and too much work. The harbour area is an extension to the Amsterdam harbours. Of course Katsburg is very far in land, so the economic viability would probably not be very good, looking at it in retrospect. The map is about 2 metres long. I used felt tip pens, ballpoints and fineliners to draw the map. Everything was taped together with normal tape, which has started to degrade by now. The whole thing has become very fragile but is still holding together.
